Dear friends of LPOS,
I do apologise for not being in touch with you very much since April, but I was hoping that we might have some positive news from the government about the reopening of live theatre and music venues.
Sadly, this hoped-for news has not yet arrived, and groups such as LPOS, like the professional theatre, are unable to make concrete plans for 2020. The roadmap for live theatre and music venues, announced on 25 June, has no timescale.
At present, government advice is that communal singing should not take place. Church services can resume, without singing, from July - several church and cathedral choirs have reported high levels of infection. Large-scale musical performances in the local area have been cancelled or postponed until 2021.
This has led the committee to reach the difficult but inevitable, decision to cancel our plans to reschedule "Carousel" for October. Unfortunately, because of commitments that LPOS has made to future productions, we cannot postpone "Carousel" until 2021.
I know that this will be very disappointing for you. It was clear from rehearsals that "Carousel" would have been an excellent production. I have thanked the production team for their hard work and encouragement, and I'd like to thank you for your continued support.
I hope you are all keeping well, and I look forward to seeing you when it is safe to do so.
Chairman, Littlehampton Players Operatic Society (LPOS)
